[00:00:00] Pam Uzzell: Do you believe art can change the world? So do I. On this show, we meet artists whose work is doing just that. Welcome to Art Heals All Wounds. I'm your host, Pam

[00:00:27] Uzzell.

[00:00:48] Next week I return with a full episode, but this voicemail that I received felt right to share, for me at least, as we continue into the holiday season and face so many situations in the world right now that may shake our sense of belonging. This beautiful voicemail from Miguel Vazquez is a reflection on the nature of belonging.

[00:01:11] What are the different groups where we might belong? How belonging can shift with different experiences? And what, for him, is the essential way that he knows that he belongs?

[00:01:24] Miguel Vazquez: Hello, Pam. I wanted to share with you my thinking around belonging. I think belonging is a complicated verb in the sense that once you apply it to the subject, it reveals the nature of the person in any given time. I think belonging is multi dimensional and is always fluid. In some cases, I think we inherit our sense of belonging, like our family, for instance, and sometimes we make it fit around needs and desires, like our friendships.

[00:02:07] Although we may belong to a group by default, like our religion, for instance, It may change as we experience the world around us, and as we're exposed to history and other points of view. When I think about belonging, I imagine being with people who nurture me, who motivate me, who listen to me, and who love me, no matter who they are.
